Tangerang, December 12, 2025 – Staple food prices in Tangerang have increased sharply ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, driven by heavy rainfall that has disrupted agricultural production in Central Java and reduced supplies to local markets, traders and farmers said.
The recent rise in staple food prices in Tangerang has been closely linked to seasonal factors, particularly continuous rainfall and increased demand ahead of the year-end holidays. Traders at Pasar Kelapa Dua reported limited supplies of key commodities such as chili and tomatoes, pushing prices higher over the past week.
Similar conditions have been reported in Central Java, one of the main production centers supplying Tangerang. According to a report by Metro TV News, farmers in several agricultural areas in the province have experienced declining harvests due to daily rainfall.
Harjono, a 55-year-old farmer from Sumowono, Semarang Regency, said "many farmers failed to harvest chili crops because of persistent rain. Under normal conditions, farmers can harvest between 30 and 50 kilograms of chili per day, but current production has dropped to less than 10 kilograms", he said.
Another farmer, Suratno, 40, from Getasan, Semarang Regency, said many farmers have not yet harvested crops such as chili and tomatoes, reducing supply in traditional markets. He added that vegetables such as cabbage, mustard greens, spinach, and spring onions remain more available and relatively stable in price.
Traders in Tangerang said the reduced supply from production areas such as Central Java has directly affected local markets. Combined with higher consumer demand during the Christmas and New Year period, the disruption has driven up prices and forced shoppers to limit their purchases.
