Tourist Boat Sinks off Padar Island, Four Foreigners Missing

Tangerang, December 28, 2025 — A tourist vessel, KM Putri Sakinah, carrying the Valencia football coach and his family, sank in the waters off Padar Island, Komodo National Park, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Friday (December 26). Four foreign tourists remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue.

The Labuan Bajo Port Authority and Harbormaster Office (KSOP) stated that the sinking was triggered by a weather anomaly in the waters surrounding Padar Island. Authorities reported that the vessel encountered severe weather conditions, including strong winds and high waves.

West Manggarai Police Chief AKBP Christian Kadang explained that the tourist boat capsized after being hit by waves reaching approximately two meters in height, causing the vessel to overturn before eventually sinking.

“Preliminary findings indicate that bad weather accompanied by high waves was the main cause of the sinking,” Christian said when contacted by Kompas.com on Sunday (December 28, 2025).

Several passengers were rescued shortly after the incident, but four foreign nationals have not yet been located. Their identities and nationalities have not been officially released by authorities.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), supported by the Indonesian Navy, police, and local volunteers, has deployed patrol boats and conducted intensive searches around the waters of Padar Island and nearby areas. Rescue operations are continuing despite challenging sea conditions.

The incident has raised renewed concerns over marine safety for tourist vessels operating in Komodo National Park, particularly during periods of unpredictable weather. Authorities have urged boat operators to closely monitor weather forecasts and strictly adhere to safety regulations to prevent similar incidents.
