Jakarta Revives Planetarium After Long Closure

Jakarta, December 26, 2025 — Planetarium Jakarta at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) in Central Jakarta has officially reopened to the public after being inactive for more than 13 years, marking a renewed chapter for science education and astronomy outreach in the capital.

The reopening ceremony took place on December 23, 2025, officiated by Governor Pramono Anung, and the facility has been accessible to visitors since December 25, 2025. According to officials, the long-closed Teater Bintang Planetarium underwent extensive revitalization and modernization efforts to enhance its educational and visitor experiences.

In a statement, Governor Pramono highlighted the historical and educational significance of the planetarium, which was originally inaugurated in 1968 as part of the Ismail Marzuki cultural complex. He emphasized that the reopening not only restores a beloved public landmark but also strengthens opportunities for young people to explore astronomy and science.

To encourage student visits, the Jakarta provincial government has introduced a special policy granting free admission for students for the first three months of operation. Tickets for the general public are available at a promotional price of around Rp10,000 until April 2026.

The renewed planetarium features updated technology, including advanced digital projection and interactive science exhibits designed to make astronomical concepts more engaging and accessible to all ages. Visitors have already shown strong interest, with multiple sessions selling out and daily attendance reportedly reaching more than 2,200 visitors on the third day alone since reopening.

Local families and students have welcomed the return of the planetarium as both a tourist destination and educational resource, especially during the holiday season when children are on school break. One visitor noted that the facility offers a fun way to learn about the solar system and space beyond Earth.

The historic reopening of Planetarium Jakarta marks a significant moment for science outreach in Indonesia’s capital, reviving a cultural institution that has long been missed by educators, astronomy enthusiasts, and the general public.
